Book Detail
Along with Gene Smith, William Albert Allard was one of my two photographic heroes and his work profoundly moved me as I was learning photography. It was a special treat to work with him, as his editor, on this book some thirty years later. I don't remember if the idea for the book was his or mine, but it evolved over a dinner at the Palm restaurant and later over glasses of red wine at a party in Perpignan France. This volume, a retrospective of Bill's American photography over a span of four decades, is presented chronologically so his growth as an artist is revealed. Bill wrote eloquent essays to accompany each chapter and David Griffin provided the masterful, clean, masculine design.
